The most northwestern volcanic formation in Costa Rica's Central Mountain Range, Platanar Volcano is located within Juan Castro Blanco National Park. Sharing the mountain with fellow stratovolcano Porvenir, the dormant Platanar features primary forest and prehistoric lava flows down its western flank.
read more closeKnown locally as Congo Hill, the volcano sits five miles southeast of Ciudad Quesada. Its eroded crater, which experts believe has not erupted in several thousand years, exhibits remains of an ancient caldera rim. Due to its extreme seclusion, Platanar is difficult to reach.
